Analyzing the State of the Blogosphere 2009

The 2009 State of the Blogosphere (SotB) was published at Technorati in 5 parts (+ an introduction) between October 19th and 23th. The study is the most comprehensive study of the current trends and demographics among the bloggers and because of this, it gives us a great opportunity to learn more about blogging.

It also gives us information about the future of blogging, something we all can build on to improve our own blogs and blogging to achieve whatever level of success each of us is shooting for.

The numbers and survey results on this article are based on the 2009 State of the Blogosphere survey. The survey itself and all the images on this article were produced by Technorati.

I’ve picked up statistics and results from the survey and included my own insights on the subject. I have not included all the diagrams, results and statistics, but instead I hand-picked the things I found most interesting and facts that can have the most impact for our blogs and blogging activities.

I’ve always been a bit of a stat-geek, so I love digging in to the graphs and demographics, and I wanted to write this article for all who don’t share the same enthusiasm towards numbers and also to have a place where we all can share our views of the survey.

So read on what I have to say about the State of the Blogosphere, read the whole feature at Technorati if you like, and join the discussion on the comments for this article!

The blogs on WordPress.com are SAFE as the WordPress.com system is up-to-date.

Thank you so much for Lorelle on WP for making a post about this, so I got the news (check Lorelle’s post for all the info).

Zemalf.com Gets New WP Theme and Design

My Shiny New Theme Design is Live!

I’m trying new things, I’ve been working on my blog design on a local-hosted WordPress for quite some time. It’s been an interesting experiment and getting all things just right hasn’t been an easy task. I wouldn’t recommend wasting time on theme design unless that is exactly what you want to do and/or learn – what was the case for me. But anyway, not it’s done and the new design is live for everyone to see..

Designing a WordPress Theme

Starting to build your own theme or design by yourself can eat days, weeks even. And professional designer gets the theme done a lot faster and ready-made theme gets the job done in anything between 15 minutes and couple of hours. However, I wanted my own design and I’m quite happy with it. It has some elements that not too many bloggers use and on the other hand, lot of familiar elements from many other blog designs and themes, including my old design.

By designing my own theme I know EXACTLY what’s in it, and what’s not in it (so I can add elements if needed). And by creating the theme myself I got it done exactly like I wanted – yes it took some time, but still, I didn’t have to negotiate and swing drafts and versions back and forth with anyone else. One of the design choices I made was limiting colors, going with gray color scale..

Limiting Colors – Focusing Attention

I chose a gray theme on purpose. It enables effective use of colors to highlight things I want to highlight. So instead of the blog jumping on new readers face in all colors of the rainbow, I wanted to present a minimalistic, easy to read, design – with emphasis on typography, gray color scale (apart from highlighting) and some graphical elements.

My older theme was Sandbox variant with my own CSS, but now I built the whole theme from ground up, firstly for interest, secondly because I wanted to learn and thirdly to get it “just right” for me without the generic parts that many themes have (because a public theme has to work on any WordPress blog). The whole theme is pure CSS at the moment, as the whole theme is grid-based and the actual design and layout comes from CSS which I can easily change.

This design is a work in progress, even thou it’s operational, so I’m looking to tweak the theme as needed to make it just right for me..

Feedback Time!

Tell me what you think, I’d really love to hear what you think about the new design?

And be honest here, I can take it :)

What you like, what you don’t like about the design?

IntenseDebate Plugin Breaks the Admin Area in WordPress – Correction is Coming [WordPress 2.8]

Having problems in your WordPress Dashboard / Admin area after the WordPress 2.8 update?

  • Can’t drag and drop in the widget area
  • Edit / Add Post page malfunctions, buttons not working, can’t display most used tags, etc.
  • etc.

It is probably because of a plugin you are using, for me it was IntenseDebate -plugin (now temporarily deactivated).

But no worries, it seems that the correction is coming, thanks to great support for IntenseDebate at getsatisfaction.com:

WordPress 2.8 Upgrade Done. Not All Good.

WordPress 2.8 has been officially released and I did the upgrade without any problems in less than a minute.

But afterwards I’ve noticed some problems in the widget controls and tagging my posts, but I guess I just gotta read up some posts and discussion how to get’em sorted. I didn’t go offline like some have because of the upgrade, but you might want to save the upgrade to a time you have time to solve issues if problems arise.

Upgrading Your WordPress to 2.8

I suggest you upgrade by clicking on the “Upgrade to WordPress 2.8 now” in your WordPress dashboard (unless you have disabled the upgrade notifications).

Or you can go and Download WordPress 2.8 and upgrade manually.

Remember to take backup before doing the upgrade, which is good practise to do before any upgrade / update you do to your blog: either export the blog posts to XML with Tools >> Export, or use a plugin like WP-DBManager mentioned in the the most essential WordPress plugins -post.

WordPress 2.8 New Features

There’s a lot of improvements in the 2.8 version and at least for me, the blog seems to be working faster, at least from the dashboard and admin screen.

To name a few which I liked right away:

  • Browse the theme directory and install themes from the admin
    • no more ftp transfers for free themes = so good
  • Allow the dashboard widgets to be arranged in up to four columns
    • if you like to take a quick look what’s going on, now it’s even easier with more customization to the dashboard
  • Improved database performance
    • like mentioned, everything seems to be faster, but have to wait for more data on this one
  • A lot features and fixes to theme and plugin developers
    • I’m looking forward to some theme and plugin goodness in the near future with the new features in.

Theres way over 150 features more in 2.8 and you can check the full list of WordPress 2.8 Features here.

What Other Bloggers Are Saying About WordPress 2.8

Every blogger and technology website has announced the news, but I picked a few if you want to read up:

All-in-all, reactions have been (mostly) positive, like they were already on beta testing and after first release candidate was out.

Like I mentioned, go ahead and upgrade to 2.8 when you have the time to check that everything is OK afterwards. And remember to BACKUP your blog first!
