Summary: Good content needs to be relevant, keyword optimized for good SEO, written with a purpose and promoted properly. Then and only then content can be King.

"Content is king" is a phrase that you hear over and over again in the Internet business community. What exactly does it mean? Is content really King? The answer is yes, as long as the content follows certain guidelines. In order for content to be king, it must be:
- Relevant
- Keyword optimized
- Written with a purpose
- Properly promoted
If your content is not all of these things, it is not king, it is little more than a waste of time and energy. Let's take each of these bullet points and expand on them a little and you'll see why.
Relevant
Relevancy in content takes two forms: how relevant your content is to the subject matter you are trying to monetize and how relevant it is to the rest of the content published on a particular domain. An example of poor relevancy would be somebody writing an article about internet marketing with links pointing back to a site that sells laptops.
That same person posts that article to an article directory that focuses on home improvement. That home improvement site might have good page rank, but the links will not be worth nearly as much as they should be. Not the best way to make money online.
Keyword Optimized
In order for an article, or any bit of content for that matter, to be keyword optimized, it should strike a balance between using your keywords enough so as to create no doubt about the subject matter of the article without being spammy.
A good rule of some is to include your keyword in its exact form once every 100 to 150 words, and include a couple of cousin keyword variations once or twice each. Keep it natural and on topic.
Editor's note: The key for SEO friendly posts is including the keyphrase in the headline (and through that, in the title tag of the page). The keyphrase should also be in the first paragraph and possible the last paragraph. Repeating the keyphrase more than those 1-2 times is not necessary, and in fact, including the keyphrase too many times will make the article less optimized.
Written with a Purpose
You should always keep in mind the intent of your content. If you are writing content that is intended to get people to buy something from you, or click to another site for whatever reason, your content should be informative and compelling. It should be easy to read, and leave your reader wanting to buy your product or click over to your website.
If the purpose for which you are writing your content is merely to target keywords so that people will find your website from search engines and click one of your adsense ads, it needs to be written in a completely different style.
For these types of sites, the content should be well written enough so that you sound like you know you're talking about, but not so informative so that your reader gets all the information that they need. You want to leave them wanting more that they can hopefully find by clicking one of your ads.
Properly Promoted
Very simply put, if you do not properly promote your content, no one will know it's out there. Usually, the best way to promote your content is by finding ways to point links to it. If your content is relevant, keyword optimized, written with a purpose, and has links pointing to it, it will be found.
The search engines will know what the article is about and that is important, so that when people go to the search engines looking for information that pertains to your content, the search engines will point those people to it. That's what earning online is all about, right?
