I installed a wordpress blog on my SEO website a few weeks ago, it's already getting a crazy amount of hits and readers. I didn't think a blogging campaign would be this successful. Thanks for the info.

using post_id + postname and just postname makes no difference, I prefer /%post_id%/%postname%/ because it has both unique element in it (post_id) and good SEO through the postname + the post_id in front enables one to use simple short URLs through little bit of .htaccess tricks.

In short, postname = keyword rich, and the keyword phrase comes in there through manual editing of the post slug when writing the post.

I've done comprehensive study of the permalinks in two earlier posts, so you might want to read my posts about the best permalink structure and WordPress permalinks.

In theory, category + postname good for SEO, but it's clunky and bad for WordPress performance and that's why I don't recomment it.

Hi Anon,

Don't these following two statements differ. In the first statement you advise to use keyword rich permalink but in the second one you recommend post_id and postname. Does that mean each postname should have keyword phrase. Would it not be easy to use category and postname?

* e.g. /important-keywords/ or /***/keyword-phrase
# I recommend /%post_id%/%postname%/ for WordPress permalinks.

Thanks Robert. I'd try to get that title "fixed" if possible - The title tag is important in many ways, as that if often shown in the search engine results too, so it will need to both rank well and make the searcher click on it. If the blog name is there at the beginning, it might lower the number of clicktroughs, unless the blog name (and keywords in it) is exactly what the search was for.

I'll be covering the writing part on the next part of the series, but these settings and configurations are something that anyone can do and it's just making a better blog, as this foundation will then help what you publish rank better. I wouldn't even call it search engine optimization, just optimization :)

And I would also say that writing for readers is the best SEO. When you're putting a title to a post that people actually search for when looking for the exact information the post offers, you're helping those searchers, right? Through "SEO", you're helping search engines to index your great content better and thus, helping people find the answers they're looking for.

Great post.
One thing that I've been trying to do is sort out the page title of my blog. The CMS that I use, appends the blog name to the post title. I have to get into the code to change that I think.

SEO is such a touchy subject now days. But the most important thing to remember is to write for your readers not the search engine. Refining later for SEO. Being careful to not overdo it.

I'd say that if one would do only only one things and one things only for SEO, it would be writing a good title. When you write that for people, that's the best SEO you can do (as long as the blog/theme puts the post title as the title tag).

If you do a quick keyword research and check if some phrase or wording in the title would be better than others for the search engines, you'd be doing more than most.
