Hi Ileane. Blog commenting (both leaving them and discussion on own blog) is one things that separates blogging from static sites and I've liked it a lot since I started it. I didn't even think of it as “promotion”, I just liked the discussion :)

For the last month, the traffic has been closer to 40% search engines with 30% from both referring sites and direct traffic.

Zemalf, congratulations on your stats, you have done a fine job of getting people to your site. I'm really glad to hear you talk about how much you value commenting and the traffic that resulted from it.

IMHO, if I'm a blog, and really taking the time to read through the comments looking for interesting feedback and decide to click on someone's link, I already have intentions on staying put and I'm prepared to browse a bit before I bounce. Finding more good content is just the icing on the cake, which is what you have here.

I think a good way to find out more about subscribers vs. Twitter follower might be to offer a poll to get more insights directly from your visitors.

Thanks Will. Although like I mentioned to Mike in the another comment, part of the search engine traffic is from the beginning of this blog, when I redirected my gaming blog here for about 3 months.

After September, blog commenting has been even more important, in addition to Twitter and such. But the search engine traffic is also picking up a bit as I've paid more attention to the titles I use in the posts.

I think that's a good strategy – I only ever comment on a blog if I can think of something worthwhile to add to the discussion.

I'm getting around 35% search traffic, but my wife's blog which started at the same time is getting 72% which is amazing!

Actually I do have to say that the stats lie a bit, as the first three months I had the gaming blog traffic redirected here, and I have 4-5 posts there that are number 1-2 for the related terms. I had this full data ready, but just checked quickly and more real search engine % is around 35-45. So actually blog commenting has been even more important than the stats show above.

And speaking of the blog commenting, some people are using some “comment sniper” tool which alerts them when a new blog post is up on a blog they want to comment on and then it's easy to jump there and be first. I've never done that, I'd rather read the post well, make a real comment and not haste it. If I get commenter's block and can't think of anything to say, I usually force myself out instead of writing some filler in.

You've done well to get 58% of your traffic from search – I don't do nearly that well. The difference for me is made up by Twitter, which gives me a higher proportion than you. I would rather have the search – it's more consistent and long term!

In fact, for a few days, you were outranking our site for “Beyond Blogging book” which was really annoying! :)

I KNOW your blog commenting strategy has worked – I've seen your comments everywhere. I'm not sure I was as targeted as you, but I kind of stumbled upon (!) a similar strategy.
