I would not be surprised if these two articles – nearly verbatim – comprised a dozen consulting reports for outfits like McKinsey & Company. This is stuff their consultants love: quick web search, copy and paste into their template, slap an Executive Summary, cover letter and invoice on it, ship it off to a client who will regard it as a “competitive advantage.”

Who would ever know?

Antti, I've gone back through both of these articles.

I realize most our readers (yours and mine) would call bullshit on the following, but it's true nonetheless.

If I had been contracted to write these two articles, I would have invoiced at least $2500 for the final report. That report would have consisted of both of these articles, an Executive Summary, an extensive discussion of methodoloy, and definitive recommendations based on client needs.

$2500 would be a minimum.

You might consider issuing this material as a standalone product.

I started using /%category%/ before the “issue” became prominent… so I've been a bit peeved about the whole thing.

It will start to be an issue on my site next year if they don't redesign. Hopefully, by the time it starts to be an issue, I'll just pay somebody to nitpick the redirects for me. I can do it, not my favorite way to spend time.

Hi Dennis. /%postname%/ is very good permalink, so I'd think hard before changing that. On the other hand, if you think you do want that unique element in it, it's better to change early than wait for years to do the change.

Thanks for the comment and contribution Dave. Personally I’m OK without the %category% as it made URLs too long IMHO. But the SEO benefit of it is there, and people are using it on permalinks, so fix is needed.

Thanks for the WP trac link, that’s a great addition to this post. Looking at the discussions about this subject, it is quite complicated fix (which is the reason it hasn’t been done yet). But that just means it’ll take a bit of time and testing to get it designed better.

Hello Sabrina and thanks for your comment. And very true, that’s why you need to ensure the 301 redirection rules are in place or add them right afterwards.

For me, WordPress found the right post from the old permalinks, but I added 301 redirects anyway to take the load off from WP (and ensure the incoming links keep their search engine factor)

Hi Michael. Having the %postname% there is what matters most for SEO, having the .html doesn’t matter. So apart from looking “blogspottish”, that permalink is fine :)

But it’s never too late to change permalink, the amount of work it takes just grows (although with your current permalink I probably wouldn’t go and switch it).

This whole /%category%/%postname%/ thing is tremendously annoying.

One of the commenters on the issue made an extremely pertinent observation: If WordPress sucks at dealing with such permalinks, then why not fix that instead.
