I create most graphics with GIMP (the open source "PhotoShop") including the pictures on this post. It's available here: http://www.gimp.org/

Ping is great for updating multiple services at the same time, but I don't do that so much, as I have concentrated my efforts on handful of services, and mainly Twitter. FriendFeed is just amazing aggregator, logging everything you do to one place.

Hi Antti,

As usual your posts full of great information. I am writing an ebook about SM automation for my subscribers and will be sending out soon. I use Ping FM primarly rather FF but both of these services are effective. How do you do graphics for your posts? The graphics really help in explaning this process.

Right-o, it'll be a bit tricky to get automatic announcement working like that: You could do it by creating special RSS feed and exclude certain category or categories, and include announcements and special posts in that category, and then use that RSS Feed in Twitterfeed.

Similarly, excluding categories from RSS feed would also work if you'd like to post something to the blog/website, but not to the RSS subscribers.

I'm referring to ALL auto updating, like the plugins that auto post to your twitter account as well.

I'm referring to certain posts that all bloggers do at one time or another; informational sure, but certainly not worthy of spreading to the word at large.

Perhaps just something your current readers/subscribers should know; just as an example.

A "fun" post your current readers might get a kick from, but outside the norm and may confuse or turn-off new readers.

Know what I mean?

Are your referring to the Twitterfeed to Twitter/Facebook connection? And why you wouldn't want to put all your posts to your followers?

Well, you can always make a custom RSS based on category or some other criteria from your blog.

Or you can add keyword filters to your own feeds if you just want to put out just some posts. Or if you update your blog frequently, adjust the update frequency and Twitterfeed will only pick the most recent one from the feed at that time.

I'll have to take a 2nd (or 3rd) look at this. Automation is great, but not when it's 100%...I wouldn't want ALL of my posts going out like that.

Thanks Patty! Luckily it's never too late to start using these great services :)

I thought about writing this as a report, but I'm more into overdelivering with "normal" blog content for now, so all the good stuff I put out is free, quick and easy by subscribing to the RSS Feed or the email updates via Feedburner. And I can always do upgraded version for the mailing list later, so it's all good.

Great article. Could have used this a few months ago when I was first starting out. Now I will use this information to perfect my social web. Thanks
You probably could have used this as a Free report to offer to people for signing up for your mailing list.

Hey there Will, you are absolutely right that FriendFeed doesn't look like much if you don't look into it.

And if someone has overlooked FF until now, but starts using it after reading this post, FriendFeed really should link back to this post, shouldn't they? :)

Hi Zemalf,

Definitely the most personally useful article that I've read in the past week - Friend Feed is a brilliant tool but its one major weakness, in my opinion, is that it doesn't present itself very well to its users.

They should link to this post from their main page really. Great stuff !

Cheers

Will

Thank you so much David! I'm not using tons of different sites either. The ones I mention on the post are the ones I use and if you recognize the logos on the illustration, that pretty much covers the rest...

Delicious deserves a special mention, as I've used it heavily for years and with effective tagging, it's one massive database for me now.

Thanks John. I realized the Youtube automatic share options only recently too, works nicely.

Definititely check Twitterfeed out if you haven't -- Its strengths are in the versatility and using URL shorteners through API (to get statistics automatically too) + the UTM codes for advanced statistics on Analytics.

Hi Antti,

What a great post!

I really think that Social Media has changed the web and I'm sure that every company should start to build its presence on the existing social media webs.

I prefer to focus on twitter, SU and DIGG rather than use them all, because I'm just a man :) but companies or those people who makes a living with blogging should consider to work hard trying to boost its social media presence.

See you Antti :)

This is a fantastic illustration of how the whole process comes together when done correctly.
I have always been a major fan of Friendfeed, mind you, I still need to patch-in my YouTube channel - Thanks for the reminder

It's also interesting to see TwitterFeed's role in kick starting the process.

Thanks Kevin. But don't look at it as a huge task. Start by adding your blog's RSS feed to Twitterfeed if you haven't done that yet. And then move on to experimenting with other RSS feeds and FriendFeed.

Thanks Andrew! I'm actually quite surprised people have not been using FriendFeed that much, I've always thinked it as the third most important "tool" for me, right after Twitter and Facebook.

Perhaps people haven't realized what it's really about and thought they don't need another Twitter or Facebook, but that's not what FF is really about, is it? As a social media aggregator, it outstanding.

Hey Sarge! If this helps you get away from creating complex Yahoo pipes, it sure was worth to write :) FriendFeed can do a whole lot of that aggregation for you, especially as you can connect any RSS feed there. Not so much filtering and tweaking as with Pipes of course, but way more simple.

Hey Erica! Yes, there are some really cool features hidden in there :) Just the integration to Twitter is very strong with the filters and all. And as Facebook bought FriendFeed a while back, I think we can expect great things from it.

Thanks Jimi. The power is hidden in the RSS feeds, and Twitterfeed does a great job utilizing that. But as I mentioned in the post, people are using it the wrong way, as some of the features are just too powerful, like the keyword filtering.

However, it is one of the best services I've found, works like clockwork and it's relatively easy too (even that my step-by-step process looks like a lot of work, it really isn't)
